Schuster Elementary 2016-2017 Physical Education Grading Policy:
Students will be graded according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Physical Education, Elementary.
Kinder and 1st: Successful completion of skills stages according to skill book. Students will learn fundamental movement skills and begin to understand how the muscles, bones, heart, and lungs function in relation to physical activity in addition to space and body awareness. Students are engaged in activities to develop basic levels of strength, endurance, and flexibility. Students learn to work safely in groups and individual and movement settings. Our major objective is to present activities which complement their natural inclination to view physical activity as challenging and enjoyable.
Grades 2-5:
Skills performance level is 30%; weekly assessment will be given using a 100 point system. Periodically, students are expected to demonstrate a particular skill as required for whatever unit being covered based on their performance.
Participation accounts for 70% of their grade; full credit will be awarded to students who participate in the activities and follow class guidelines as set forth by the coaches. Students who are listening, participating and following instructions from both PE coaches will earn full credit for participation. Students learn to demonstrate key elements of fundamental and progressive movement skills and mature from locomotive skills. Students learn to describe the function of the heart, lungs and bones as they relate to movement. Students are introduced to basic concepts of health promotion such as the relationship between a physically active lifestyle and the health of the heart. Students learn to work in a group and demonstrate the basic elements of socially responsible conflict resolution. The student demonstrates competency in fundamental movement patterns and proficiency in a few specialized movement forms.
